Brazilian Economy

You may have noticed that the price of everything is going up; every product is more expensive than ever before. This price increase is to be expected all around the world, especially because of inflation. However, it becomes concerning when prices go up faster than our wages, as this means our purchasing power is going down. That's exactly what has been happening here in Brazil for decades. Amid all the political instability and economic crises, our purchasing power has gone down a little bit every year.

Most people don't see the problem simply because they don't want to. For the most part, Brazilians are easily distracted by soccer and soap operas and don't pay much attention to the country's financial situation. We have been in an economic crisis for so long that nobody calls it a crisis anymore; this situation is just the new normal. At the same time, the minimum wage is not enough to pay for rent and to buy food for a family at same time; you must choose one or the other. I'm fortunate that I'm not married and don't have any kids, because I can barely make ends meet as it is.

Meanwhile, many of our corrupt politicians get richer by the minute as taxes climb at an alarming rate. Even so, no one is talking about it. The media is undeniably influenced by the government, and it talks about everything except our country's real issues. Most people have no idea that taxes make up about half the price of everything in Brazil. In other words, people could afford twice as much if it weren't for the government's interference. The truth is, our country is sick, and the only ones who have the power to fix our system are the same ones who benefit from it, so a voluntary change will likely never happen.
